Hitchcock uses The Birds to build suspense by taking his time. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels' relationship long before any events occur. Jessica Tandy's portrayal as Brenner's mother Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette's performance as Annie who was his former girlfriend are both memorable. The screenplay was written by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known by his nickname Ed McBain, from a novella by Daphne Du Maurier. His use of electronic music as opposed to a music score worked very well. Hitchcock researched a strange attack that occurred on Capitola in the state of California in 1961 by sooty Shearwaters, which was believed to have been caused by diatom poisoning resulting from the anchovies the birds ate and subsequently caused an extreme level of anger.
